Sales tactics and red flags

The rebate rules were tightened partly to curb overselling of large batteries (ABC News).
Common tactics
- "The rebate ends tomorrow." Step-down dates are published in advance. The next is 1 January 2027 (6.8 → 5.7 STCs/kWh, per the CER).
- The free upsize. A bigger battery is "only a bit more". Above 28 kWh, extra capacity earns just 15% of the rebate rate.
- Bill-free sizing. They pick a battery size without looking at your usage.
- Guaranteed savings with no stated assumptions.
- Door-knocking or cold calls. Unsolicited agreements carry extra consumer protections, including a cooling-off period. Check the ACCC's guidance.
- A government-sounding name or "program partner" claims used to suggest official endorsement.
- A large deposit before a site visit.
What to do
Slow down, get three quotes, and compare net price per usable kWh.
